Instagram introduces anti-bullying feature

Uncategorized Jul 09, 2019

Instagram had already declared war on bullying: “We are in a pivotal moment,” says Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri: “We want to lead the industry in this fight.” The new initiative of Instagram comes from the hand of AI artificial intelligence: flagged comments and the ability for users to restrict accounts from publicly commenting on their posts.

Instagram now asks bullies: "Are you sure you want to post it?":

The company it’s rolling out a new feature that’ll leverage AI to flag potentially offensive comments and ask the commenter if they really want to follow through with posting. They’ll be given the opportunity to undo their comment, and Instagram says that during tests, it encouraged “some” people to reflect and undo what they wrote.

If the user taps “learn more”, a notice informs: “We are asking people to rethink comments that seem similar to others that have been reported.”

Restricted

This tool is designed to help teens filter abusive comments without resorting to blocking others - a blunt move that could have repercussions in the real world.
