How to spy on your Competitor’s Facebook Ads

The feature I'm going to talk about in this post is not new (was released a couple of months back). However, on daily conversations with E-Commerce Owners and marketers, I noticed the vast majority of them still don't know about this easy and free trick.

Since all the Cambridge Analytica scandal was uncovered, which had its decisive or critical point on March 2018, Facebook is working on being more transparent. That's one of the main reasons why the Info and Ads section was added on Facebook Fan pages. The era of "dark posts" is close.

Going straight to the point, if you want to spy on your competitor's facebook ads, go to their fan page and on the right side column, look at the Info and Ads tab. (normally the last one)

 

By clicking here you will see the latest Ads of your competitor. The only thing you will not see (yet) is the social interactions on their Ads (likes, shares, comments...)

Facebook Campaign Budget Optimization

By November 2017, Facebook announced the Campaign Budget Optimization. A new way to maximize Facebook & Instagram Campaigns and ensure better Return On Ad Spent (ROAS). During the firsts months of 2018, the roll out has been done. 

How does the Campaign Budget Optimization work?

When setting up a Campaign, select the "Optimize budget across ad sets" option.

With this option, Facebook will automatically distribute your Budget between all your Ad Sets to get the best results. Here is a picture for a better explanation:

 

 

Despite the fact Facebook says is the current best way to Optimize your campaigns... doubt it!

Learn How to Manage your Time on Instagram & Facebook: what?

Yes, you read well. Facebook yesterday's announcement was the launch of a tool to manage your time on Instagram and Facebook.

This new feature will basically include:

  1. An activity dashboard
  2. A daily reminder
  3. And a new way to limit notifications

And this is exactly how will look like in both platforms:

 

How to access to let's name it... Facebook/Instagram Time Manager?

  1. Go to the settings page on either app
  2. On Instagram, tap “Your Activity,”
  3. And on Facebook, tap “Your Time on Facebook".

Facebook Audience Network: See where your ads appeared

Have you ever wondered where your brand is appearing when selecting the Audience Network, Instant Articles or In-Stream Videos?

Wouldn't you like to prevent your Ads from running next to certain types of content?

If you want, you can.

Basically you have follow the next steps:

  1. Access to the edition section of an Ad Set.
  2. Click on Chart (instead of edit / pencil icon ) and then on Placement.
  3. Just below the charts, you will find this new function.

Two things could happen after doing this 3 firsts steps:

  1. You download the excel and is empty
  2. The excel has what I was looking for

In both cases, go then to the "Edit" section of the Ad Set (pencil)

and apply or create a Block List (in case the excel was not empty)

You can also exclude categories as seen above this line.

Going back-> if your downloaded excel was empty, click on Create a block List.

You will access to the are where Block Lists are created + another chance to download the list of places where your ads could have...

Facebook & Google finally share data between their "Silos"

Who has not suffered from different Attribution Models between the two Digital Marketing Giants, Facebook & Google? At least in the US and Europe one can clearly say that these two giants have a Duopoly when it comes to Digital Media Spend (>60% in the US in 2017).

However, up until this year they never really communicated between each other and therefore lead their customers to wrong conclusions because every one attributed the conversions mainly to themselves. 

This could result for example in the scenario where an eCommerce Owners sees in Shopify 10 Sales per day, but Google says that 7 from them come form AdWords an Facebook says that 8 of them come from Facebook Ads. But where do the 5 additional sales come from? 

Well, they basically come from double-attribution which is now finally tackled by the biggest Data-Transfer-Project of Digital Marketing World.

This new AR Ad format will be available for News Feed Placement. There is still no release date, but some brands has already tested the new feature. Michael Kors and Sephora among others.
